Learn how to easily set your Steam Deck admin (sudo) password after a factory reset using only the on-screen keyboard.
Step-1: Get into “Computer Mode”
On your Steam Deck, press the Steam Button, go to Power, and select Switch to Desktop. Wait a few seconds for it to load.
Step-2: Open the Command Window
Look at the bottom-left corner of your screen (the “Start” menu).
- Click the Application Launcher (the Steam Deck logo icon).
- Click on System.
- Click on Konsole. (It looks like a small black box).
Step-3: Summon the Keyboard
You don’t need a physical keyboard!
- Press the Steam Button and the X Button at the same time.
- The keyboard will pop up on your screen.
Step-4: Set Your Secret Code
Now, type the following exactly as shown:
- Type
passwdand press Enter on the digital keyboard. - The “Invisible” Part: It will ask for a “New Password.” Type a simple password (like
1234).
Note: The screen will NOT show any letters or dots while you type. This is normal! Just type it and hit Enter. - Confirm: It will ask you to “Retype” it. Type the same password again and hit Enter.
Success
If you see “password updated successfully,” you are now the boss of your Steam Deck. You can now install apps and change system settings.
