1. The Pick Choose any door. You have a 1 in 3 chance of hitting the Car π.
2. The Reveal The host opens another door to reveal a Goat π. You are now left with your door and one other closed door.
3. Switch or Stay? This is the game-changer. You must decide:
- Stay: Keep your original door.
- Switch: Move to the other closed door.
Monty Hall Problem
There are 3 Doors:
- Door 1: Goat π
- Door 2: Goat π
- Door 3: Car π
The 3 Steps
- You Pick: You choose one door (e.g., Door 1). You have a 1/3 chance of being right.
- The Reveal: The host (Monty), who knows what’s behind the doors, opens a different door to show a Goat (e.g., Door 2).
- The Choice: Monty asks: “Do you want to Stay with your door or Switch to the other closed one?”
The Math (Why You Should Switch)
Most people think itβs a 50/50 guess at the end. Itβs not.
- If you Stay: You only win if you were right on your very first guess. Odds: 33.3%.
- If you Switch: You win if your first guess was wrong. Since you were wrong 2 out of 3 times at the start, switching wins 66.6% of the time.
The Bottom Line: By switching, you essentially “steal” the odds of the two doors you didn’t pick at the start. Always switch.
