The cylinder tumbler strongbox puzzle is the one most Crimson Desert players struggle with. It looks simple — just a few rotating cylinders and a wooden line. But the alignment is very precise. Even if the pins look correct, the box will not open unless they are perfectly lined up. Here’s how the puzzle works and how to solve it.
Before you start: You need a mask equipped to steal the loot after opening. Find one from bandits, or buy it from the merchant at the backyard shop southeast of the first town, east of the Swamp Root Cattle Ranch.
How the Cylinder Tumbler Lock Actually Works
Each cylinder has a seam line that splits its top and bottom halves. Your goal is simple: move each cylinder up or down until the seam lines up with the horizontal wooden line on the box.
When all seams match the wooden line, press the right-side button and the lower panel will open.
The difficulty is entirely in the imprecise visual feedback — not the puzzle logic itself.
Step-by-Step Solution
- Activate the lock — hit the knob on the far right first. The cylinders won’t respond until you do this.
- Work one cylinder at a time — use each cylinder’s own rotating board. Don’t adjust multiple at once.
- Target the seam line — the visible dividing line in the middle of each cylinder must sit exactly on the horizontal wood panel line.
- Follow the height pattern — the far left and right cylinders need to be raised the most. The middle cylinders need only a small adjustment.
- Test often — press the right-side button after each cylinder, not just at the end. It gives per-pin feedback.
- If it still won’t open — raise every cylinder exactly one notch higher, even if they look perfectly aligned. The tolerance is extremely tight.
PC players only: The controls are inverted — pressing “Lower” actually raises the pin.
Quick Tips
- Activate first — hit the far-right knob before touching any cylinder.
- Height pattern — outer cylinders go highest, middle cylinders lowest.
- Test per pin — use the test button after each adjustment, not at the very end.
- One notch trick — looks aligned but won’t open? Raise everything one slot higher.
- Wear your mask — equip before opening, not after, to claim the loot.
Rewards
The Southern Bluemont Manor strongbox gives you the Finely Crafted Gold Necklace. The Hillside Manor variant rewards the Saint’s Necklace, which grants a temporary stamina boost when used. Both are worth the effort, especially if you’re refining gear.
