Want to make your screen spin? Google has a hidden trick that rotates the entire search results page 360 degrees. Here is how to use it and what to do if it stops working.
1. How to Do a Barrel Roll
- Open your web browser and go to Google.com.
- Type
do a barrel rollinto the search bar. - Press Enter or click search. The page will instantly perform a full 360-degree spin.
Note: Older tech blogs claim typing z or r twice also works. Google has disabled this shortcut. Today, only the exact phrase do a barrel roll works on the official Google site.
2. Can You Spin It Multiple Times?
The official Google search page is hardcoded to spin exactly one time. Typing “do a barrel roll 20 times” or “do a barrel roll 100 times” on Google will not make it loop; it will still only rotate once.
If you want to see the page spin again, you simply have to clear the search bar and hit Enter again to re-trigger the visual animation.
3. Quick Troubleshooting: Why Isn’t It Spinning?
If your screen stays completely still when you search the phrase, check these three quick fixes:
Turn Off “Reduce Motion”: If you have disabled system animations in your Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android accessibility settings, your browser will block the spin to prevent dizziness. Turn motion effects back on in your device settings.
Enable Hardware Acceleration: Ensure hardware acceleration is turned on in your browser settings (Settings > System > Use graphics acceleration when available). Without it, your browser cannot process the 3D visual rotation.
Try Incognito Mode: Certain ad-blockers, custom script-blockers, or user style sheets can interfere with Google’s CSS animations. Opening a private window forces a clean environment where the trick can run smoothly.
